Tell us about yourself and how you got into this business…

I have a background in film and television production, and began my journey as a wedding and event videographer. In 2009, I went to a friend’s wedding in California that had a photo booth. I loved it and I knew it was something new and different I could offer to diversify my services. My first booth was an Open Air Photo Booth with a hand sewn enclosure and a bench. In the last 16 years, I’ve learned a lot about the photo booth industry, what type of work I prefer, and how I like to operate. Thought I’ve had employees in the past, I feel most comfortable (and make the most profit) as a single operator.

What is your favourite booth?

You’re going to laugh, but when I’m printing I still love my I-Click booth (thanks Jason W). It is the easiest to tilt, which comes in handy with mixed age events. And it is sturdy which I like around rowdy crowds. If I’m not printing, I like a Mobibooth Aura.

What is your favourite software?

I’ve used Breeze DSLR Pro from the beginning and prefer a windows based system. I run a lot of events on Snappic as well, and love the customer support response time.

Tell us about the best event you ever did?

I don’t think I have one favorite event from my many years of photo boothing. I love events where I know the photo booth is preserving memories. At weddings, I love sessions with 3+ generations and groups of cousins that grew up as best friends. I love knowing that the photo I’m printing are going up on someone’s fridge or office board, and that people will smile when they look at them. I love any event where someone brings a dog, or any animal, over to the booth.

Your 3 Tips for Success in the Photo Booth Industry

1. Have a backup of everything and add accessories to your pack list if there is the slightest chance you’ll need them. I never leave home without a backup camera, printer, media, cables, flash, and computer/tablet. Other item that I like to have on-hand are back-prop or wall-prop, heavy base weights, extra backdrop, battery or cable runners in case I can’t use gaff tape, a towel/extra table linen for spills, and large clamps. The worst event is one you can’t finish, so set yourself up for success.

2. Think before you buy – will this make me more profitable? There is no need to jump on a bandwagon if it doesn’t make you money in the long run. There are so many ways to invest in your business, just make sure you can sell that experience or have time to learn that hardware/software before spending big bucks.

3. Make time for yourself. It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t take time off to enjoy experiences with family, friends, or something that isn’t work.
